Many varieties of milkweed can make any herbivore sick. The plant makes its own insect repellent, and the leaves are toxic to just about everything but the monarch larvae. The monarchs are able to absorb the toxins, which will then sicken or kill many of the predators who would eat the monarchs.

I doubt that my overfed feral cats are fast enough to catch those birds. They can take flight in an instant.
