Reset Forty-Four, Day Fifteen

Monday I finally got around to eating my last spiky, punk vegetable, the fourth of the artichokes I bought two weeks ago. It was probably past its prime, but it was good anyway, though the best part of the meal was the butter I put on it, and the bottle of porter I washed it all down with. Later I was still a bit hungry, not surprisingly, so I fixed a bowl of grits. More butter, of course, cinnamon sugar on top, and a glass of unsweetened chocolate milk with a shot of brandy. My diet may be a bit odd these days, but it's not too much weirder than it has been for the last dozen years. People who can cook probably disapprove, but by my standards I think I'm doing pretty well. At least I remain unpoisoned, for now.

I remembered to put the wheelie bin out at the street, but I forgot to charge the phone, so I lost Idernet for a while and had to wait to get it back. That's when I fixed the grits. I don't think I cooked them quite long enough, as they were gritty, which those unfamiliar with the dish may think is the whole point of grits, given their name, but they are actually supposed to be a bit smoother than I made them this time. At least that's the way I like them. I also forgot to put some almond flour in them, which does make them a bit smoother, as well as providing a bit of fat and protein. I'll try to remember next time.

There will probably be more grits coming up as the nights continue to cool. A chilly night is the best time for hot cereal. Most people probably eat them for breakfast, but I can't bear anything that heavy for at least two or three hours after getting up. Plus I'm too unfocused to do any cooking for about that same amount of time. Were it not for already-prepared donuts and cookies I probably wouldn't eat breakfast at all. Maybe a candy bar, or a dish of ice cream. Mmm, ice cream for breakfast. I'll have to remember that.

The days are going to have highs in the eighties for the rest of the month, but should drop down into the seventies in early October. The next rain in the forecast isn't until October 10, and that's only a 42% probability. I sure miss the rainier autumns we used to get, back before California was annexed by Hell. Of course there's still a possibility we'll get a wet December, as we did last year. Better late than never, I guess.
