Now that the orchard is partly treeless, I can see a porch light beyond it by night. Looking at it makes me unaccountably sad. That much distance was never part of the nocturnal scene here. I'm accustomed to the only emptiness being skyward. Having it suddenly appear on the ground is disturbing. I wish they would turn the light off. The half moon is the only far light I want to see tonight.

Something that makes me happier is this video at YouTube. It's the Lecuona Cuban Boys playing Lecuona's rumba "Cachita." What makes it especially interesting is that the person who posted it chose to use the song as accompaniment to a series of Rene Magritte paintings. They make an odd but somehow appropriate combination.

distant lights in the dark tend to make me feel sad, too. i had one apartment overlooking a small copse, and at nightfall, i'd see the lights through the trees and get very melancholy.

love the rumba! it featured my favorite magritte. i'll try to find it and come back and post a link, because i'm feeling brainlessly unable to describe it. :D
the website's from CERN, ooh flashback...
