Heat Returning

August in all its blazing rage is about to slam into us. This may be the last cool day here for a week or so. The one thing for which those of us who live in the mountains can be grateful when the dog days arrive is that we don't live in the valley. It will be hot here. It will be hotter there. This may be why, for the last hour, I have heard so many cars moving up the main road a block west of my house. The usually silent hour today sounds more like a rush hour. Those well-to-do residents of Sacramento and the other valley cities who can afford to keep cabins in the mountains, and take off early for the weekend, are fleeing the impending heat wave. Happily, the State's failure to have settled the issue of the budget will prevent the legislature from leaving the capital. May the lot of them roast!

Last evening, on my walk, I moved close to a weedy vacant lot to let a car pass in the narrow street. When I got home, I saw that my pant leg had more than a dozen nettles clinging to it. They must have leaped onto it, since I'm sure I didn't brush against any of the plants. They are such aggressive little seed pods! No wonder the cats are always coming home with their fur full of them. How appropriate they are to August!

I heard that Saddam Hussein is at least one-half nettle, as well as several other world leaders, including Berlusconi of Italy.

Wait, if Saddam and Dubya both have some nettle blood, what can be the meaning of the current tension between the US and Iraq? Is something deep and sinister going on?

Or are the nettles creating a diversion from their secret plans to destroy humanity and replace us with nettlekind?
