Geese

Late this afternoon, I saw the first flock of geese this year flying south. They were about 300 yards west, silhouetted against the silvery clouds, and honking like crazy. Another autumn milepost.

Last year I heard the first Canadas in late September. This year, I haven't heard them yet, and I have been at home, and it's been quiet. Milder winter expected, maybe? By now, I should have heard several flocks.

On the other hand, already I have noticed the return of winter resident ducks to a small local wetland area.
