One of the marvelous things about Live Journal is that its wide variety of users provides the confirmed people-watcher endless opportunities for entertainment. From time to time, I come across something so astonishing that I wonder how it can even be. A while ago, I happened across a recently formed community (journal 919903, in fact) which already has 483 members (and not one of them showed up in bold type on my computer, meaning that not one person on my friends list is a member) and it made me gasp with astonishment. I know that it is cruel to draw amusement from the plight of the hopelessly obtuse, but in this instance, I truly can't help myself. The sheer thick-wittedness of this community had me fairly laughing my ass off. The name will give you a clue.

It is called

nonuglies! Take a look at the user info page first. It declares nonuglies to be "The Ugly People Hater Beautiful Person Community." It also contains this link to a particular post in the community, which is probably the single most amazing display of wounded narcisscism I have ever come across in my life. On reading it, I didn't know whether to laugh out loud or mutter The horror, the horror! I could say more, but this phenomenon must truly be seen to be believed. Not for the faint of heart, I warn you! If approached without a proper appreciation for vile unintentional humor, seeing this community is the sort of thing that could destroy one's last shred of respect for humanity.

I made no comments in the community, though I was tempted. This is something best enjoyed by lurking. It is like watching a horror movie, and you want to scream at the fools on the screen Watch out! But think how dull such movies would be if the characters heard the warning, and heeded it. It is best to let them go their way, and meet their dismal fates, as we watch, not in pity and terror, but in peals of delightfully cynical laughter.

Strikes me as rather pitiful. I feel rather sorry for folks that go there, looking for a "am I hot or not" experience. The interests sum it up nicely. I wonder if this is a natural spinoff of the naked parts communities and such.

There is a degree of pathos there, but it is undermined by the whole "we're beautiful and you're not" thing. It's difficult to raise any sympathy for such unbridled conceit. The thing that makes it funny is that so many of the posters seem to be oblivious to their own shallowness, and unaware of the fact that they are quite ordinary as far as looks go -- even after the other ordinary looking people in the community have ragged on them.

They would probably be offended by any comparison to nakedparts and its variants. One guy posted some pics of himself in the shower (Not even very risque pics, at that) and was banned from the community by one of the moderators. Nakedparts, on the other hand, is merely a bit of rather juvenile exhibitionism. At least when I looked at it (its been a while) the members (no pun intended) of the community didn't seem to go out of their way to be cruel to each other. Nouglies has some of the meanest replies to posts I've ever seen. I don't think we'd find much overlap between the two communities. Of the two, I'd say nakedparts is by far the healthier.

Kind of reminds me of High School, and not in "Ahhhh, bout of nostalgia" way. More in a "Ahhhhhhh, it's finally summer vacation" way.

Sometimes I feel that there's something seriously wrong with me.

The reason for this is simple.

It would be pointless. Mere physical mutilation could never be as horrible as the psychic mutilation from which they already suffer. Most of them won't be getting any better looking with age. They won't be able to lie to themselves forever. As long as they have their judgmental attitudes, they will feel misery with every line that forms, every little sag that develops. They are going to be very unhappy people. Those who have money will pay plastic surgeons to mutilate them, in a vain (truly!) attempt to perpetuate the illusion. Time will mutilate the rest of them sooner, but all of them eventually.
