Amazing, how doing so little can take up so much time.

When I went for a walk this afternoon, I saw kids playing basketball in shorts and t-shirts. How do they do that in this weather? How do they find the time to do it at all?

Are there no chores?

Are there no prisons?

Are there no workhouses?

And, in various front yards, I have seen a new Christmas oddity. It is a white spiral of what is probably some sort of plastic, shaped into a tree-like cone, lined with blinking lights, with a lit star at the top. The latest seasonal lawn ornament, it seems. I guess some people love the holidays because it gives them the chance to display astonishing things in their yards. Well.

I need to set up a few holiday lights.... hmmm... are you decorating?

Nah, no decoration in my yard. This is not a very decorative block. One guy on the corner puts up those lights that hang from the eaves like icicles. Only two kids live on this block, so nobody goes in for the fancy stuff.

This new lawn ornament sounds like a traffic cone with a star on top. Am I in the ballpark?

About the same shape, but larger (about 5' tall) and just a long, spiraling coil of white, studded with tiny light bulbs. I find them disconcerting, like those aluminum Christmas trees some people have.

I've been thinking that I might buy one of those disposable cameras (since I'm pretty sure my old Olympus is defunct) and have the pictures developed by one of those companies which will post them to the web (since I don't have a scanner.) I don't know what the quality of the pictures would be, or how small they would be, but it seems unlikely that I'll be getting a better way to put pictures on the web any time soon.

Well, that may be fine for the English. Everone knows that the English grow warm coats of luxurient fur on their bodies. No. wait... those are bears! Sorry. (I get confused, sometimes.)

But Californians are not supposed to enjoy this freezing weather. Well, close to freezing. Well, 25 degrees above freezing.

Californians who like the cold are inevitably deported to Alaska, in exchange for the oil which is then burned for power to keep the rest of us warm. A nice arrangement, really. Alaska gets cheap labor, and we get warm toes.

*lol* I like that, can you send some of them over here, we could burn them because we are too poor to afford fuel and are running out of first born children to burn :-p

We might be induced to send over a few, in exchange for some of that nice dark beer. That would be quite as valuable as oil, I'm sure. And probably just as productive of heat, though probably not of energy.

You mean Guiness, or water from the Thames, they both have the same poisonous qualities...

Guinness is actually easy to come by here. I was thinking more of some of the brews about which

blackcustard is always posting. Very local products, apparently. I've never heard of most of them.

Nor have I, we just have the normal type lagars and bitters here, all of which are perfectly acceptable for getting plastered though :P
