One of the rewards of reading stuff on the Internet is that, once in a while, I find a line which, though there is clearly something wrong with it, pleases me tremendously. I just found one such on a web page about the history of Ramona School in San Bernardino, California. In addition to some interesting information about the architect David Witmer, and some nice pictures of the school (which bears a strong resemblance to the somewhat smaller schools of the same era in the area where I grew up), the article provided me with this splendid line of prose, in a comment on the school's design:
"The plan lent itself perfectly to southern California's sunny climate where people need architecture that mingles them with elements."
I find myself charmed by the notion of having an architecture that mingles me with elements, even though I'm already made up of elements. A person can always use more, right? I mean, as long as the element isn't Strontium 90 or anything of that sort.

Though the days continue to grow warmer, they have not yet reached the point at which they will become uncomfortably hot. Nevertheless, I need to be careful when going out during the afternoon. I just noticed that my nose is bright red as a result of the time I spent in the direct sunlight this afternoon. I think I need to pick up some sunblock. If my nose is to be bright red, I want it to be the result of excessive drinking, not excessive exposure to sunlight!

A stronger scent of jasmine is making its way into the house each night. The jasmine flowers are particularly abundant this year and I have the feeling that their perfume will be particularly persistent—unless we get some more rain, but that seems increasingly unlikely. The nights may continue to be heady well into summer. I imagine owls and bats fainting from it and falling from the sky. Well, maybe that won't happen, but strange things loom, I'm sure. I hope I can remain conscious to observe them.
