Moonset

Because this area is still fairly well wooded, the western horizon is blocked from view along my street. I can see the light of sunset because it covers a great deal of the sky, but the moon has insufficient light to be visible once it passes behind the trees. A couple of years ago, the trees west of the road a block west were thinned out to make room for a number of new houses. I have discovered that, at this time of year, there is a place in the trees just a bit north of west from my house where, for a few minutes, I can see the setting moon between the branches of the pines. I have to stand in a particular spot in my yard to see it, and it soon vanishes, but there it is, large and with a slightly orange cast, with just a few branches draped across it. Tonight, it was just past half full, and was visible for a few minutes just before three o'clock. I must remember that it will be a bit later each night, as it waxes. Goodnight, moon.
