Sometimes the acorns now rattle down onto rooftops one after another, or even two or three at a time, even without a breeze to detach them from the trees. It can sound a bit like small arms fire. Oh, wait. Maybe the squirrels have launched a war! On us! And just when the weather was getting so nice, too. Stupid cute rodents.

But now that October is well advanced, I keep listening for the sound of geese or ducks or swans returning. So far I've heard only a couple of early flocks, and those a couple of weeks ago. Any day now, though, more will be flying over. They most often turn up about dusk, or in the morning twilight. Autumn is incomplete without a bit of honking or quacking.

While I'm on the subject of beasts: It turns out Catholic dogs go to heaven. Actually, somebody had fun with that church sign generator, and enough people took the consequent sequence of pictures posted to the Internets seriously that Snopes has put up a page "debunking" the joke. Now my pet rock wants to be shriven. The poor thing's as dumb as a palin'.*

geese we have by the million out this way. they winter at ft. meade, on the pond. but swans? i've never seen a flock of swans!

the church sign war is hilarious. i'll take the catholic side in this case, so long as they let in cats too. :)

There is a ton of sign generator web toys @ www.CustomSignGenerator.com (http://www.CustomSignGenerator.com) (many online tools to create custom graphics, from logos to fake magazine covers).

I was driving back from the Trinity Alps recently, and while on I-5 about 50 miles northwest of Sacramento saw ENORMOUS flocks of geese heading northwest. They came over in scores and scores of V-formations, spreading out across the horizon for about a half-mile to a mile. Never seen anything like it before.
