R.I.P.

The nursing home called a while ago to let me know that my mother died this evening. The call was not unexpected. The last few times I've visited her she was obviously in rapid decline, growing ever more frail. Since early this week she had barely been able to realize that anyone was there, and would fall asleep after a few words had been exchanged with her visitors or the nurses. At least her last few weeks were not troubled, as my dad's had been. She was usually calm, and as comfortable as could have been expected given her age and her many ailments, and told visitors "Don't worry about me." As I had recently come to expect, she died a few weeks short of what would have been her 95th birthday. She had a long life, and most of it was good. Rest In Peace, Mom. We'll miss you.

my sympathies. almost-95 was an impressive age. that generation lived through enormous changes and were so hardy. i'm glad your mother was calm at the end.

I'm sorry she's gone, but glad it was relatively easy for her. Glad very little of her time was spent there; my mom survived two years in a nursing home.
Remember her the way she used to be!

Thanks. Yes, they did see a lot of changes. My mom often spoke of one of her earliest memories being the first Armistice Day parade in Phoenix, when she was three years old. Phoenix wasn't very big then, so she was undoubtedly one of the last people living who remembered that event— or maybe the very last.

Thanks. I wish we could have kept her home those last three months, but it had become too difficult looking after her without professional help, which we couldn't afford. But at least we were able to find her a decent nursing home.

I've been intending to get my email working again, but until I get the desktop running and get the RAM upgraded, it's no go. I've misplaced the paper that has most of my passwords on it, too, so for now this journal is the only thing of mine on the Internet I can use.

Thank you. I knew that my mom probably wouldn't last too long after my dad died. She'd always said she didn't want to be the last to go.
