The jasmine season was much too brief this year. First, it was delayed by cool weather that lingered too long, and now most of the blossoms have died prematurely because of the scorching heat that came too early. The night is barely scented because the jasmine is now so sparse, and because there were only five gardenias this year, and only two remain unwithered after the recent heat. July is bringing only the smell of pine resin and dessicated grass. In a good year, the air is perfumed from early May until early August, but this year we had barely six weeks of sweet scents.

It's distressing that we're not even three weeks into summer and the oppression is already upon us. I'm dreading the approach of August.
