Of all the books I have read, I have never once had the pages suddenly go blank because there was a power surge. When reading a magazine, I have never had to click on a button to avoid having it vanish because I had not turned a page within a prescribed length of time. Of all the words I have written on paper, I have never lost one because of a browser crash.

Computers may be convenient, they may take up less space than a public library, or even a bookcase full essential of reference works. But they have a hell of a long way to go when it comes to reliability and ease of use.

Good point. I'll always love my library. Besides, no one writes true novels online, or at least, good ones.

books are better for traveling, the subway, and they are usually quieter. i think i'll always like books... (i like the tangible. there is something intangible about computers) ...i do not always like the computer. well i don't always like all books...oh bother. this is turning into a ramble.

a final thought on the matter: today my friend told me that sometimes she wishes her computer was alive, so she could kill it. you don't really get that with a book. well i don't.

Man, you think they'd have some way to back everything up. It's not like we haven't had capacitors for when the power goes out for what, a couple of centuries now?

I sometimes think that the shelf was the most important invention of the ancient world, after writing. The peoples of Mexico and Peru managed to create advanced civilizations without using the wheel for anything other than childrens toys. I doubt that they could have gotten so far without shelves. And the library is the apotheosis of the shelf. All that thought, so beautifully organized! That is what the digital world needs- some supremely rational and intuitive equivalent of the shelf.

A few more lines of code in the LJ client would be a big help. My e-mail program has an autosave feature that is pretty reliable. It can't be that difficult.
