Crash!

This afternoon I was on my back porch when I heard a big chunk of tree fall somewhere nearby. I looked everywhere I can see from the yard and saw no evidence of such an event, but the sound was unmistakable, so the fallen branch must be hidden by buildings. I'm pretty sure it was out beyond my back fence. The fall was preceded several seconds earlier by a loud cracking sound, which I thought was a large pine cone hitting a metal roof, but then the unmistakable sound of a tree splitting came and I reflexively ducked. I thought it was the big oak next door, which leans over the den and back porch of my house.

I wasn't sure that I wasn't about to get crushed myself until the noise stopped when the branch that fell hit the ground, or whatever it hit. When big branches hit the ground they usually make a big thump, and I didn't hear a big thump so I think this one might have sideswiped another tree that broke its fall. It annoys me that I couldn't see the site. Nobody from any nearby houses came out to see what had happened. They probably all had their air conditioners going and thus didn't hear the event.

Anyway, that was the most excitement we've had around her in a long time, and apparently I'm the only person in the neighborhood who knows about it. Well, except for whoever has to clean up a fallen branch in their yard.

Tonight the house might actually get cool enough that I'll be able to sleep comfortably. It will be nice not to wake up soggy for a change. And maybe tomorrow I'll hear chain saws revealing the location of today's arboreal disaster.

Sure glad the branch didn't fall on you! When the derecho hit Laurel and broke one of my Bradford pears, I was watching (and listening) from the front door. That really is a distinctive sound!

We're in for it up here, with heat advisories over the weekend and then spikes of up to 94 next week. If I had a/c, I'd go ho-hum, after the DC area, but I don't. It scares me a little. I love it that NOAA is saying to stay in an air-conditioned room. Right, if they'll supply one. Aargh.

Except for today, which is supposed to be 89 degrees, we won't have any daily highs as low as 94 for the next ten days. The highest temperature is supposed to be 102 next Monday, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went even higher. Worse is the fact that lows will be 70 or above for about half the upcoming nights, and most of the rest will be in the high 60s (it's supposed to get down to a delicious 63 tonight.) That is so... un-Californian! It's supposed to cool off at night here!

Ugh, 102. I hope you do get that overnight coolth! That's the saving grace of Seattle, too, with chillier air rolling in off the Sound, but even it has a hard time compensating for temps in the 90s. I'd buy a little a/c for the window, but my windows open sideways, so that's a no-go. *preparing to swelter*

My daughter-in-law told me the other day that, about 4 years ago, it got up to 110 or so. If it does that, all bets are off and I head for the Arctic Circle.

The thing that really chaps my ass is that over the next ten days the highest temperature in San Francisco is going to be... 74 degrees! Their highest low temperature is gong to be a mere 57, and the daily highs will be in the high 60s for seven of the next ten days!

Those bastards! Hogging all the coolth for themselves!
