I got the shopping done today, and actually spent a bit less than I'd expected to. I bought a couple of things I hadn't planned on buying, but also didn't buy a few things that had been on the list. I've actually forgotten most of what I bought, but I do remember getting cookies. I already had cookies in the house, but this particular package called out to me, and seduced me with sweet lies.

Cookies are good at that. They'll tell you anything to get into your pantries. Especially those seductive chocolate chip cookies such as I bought today. You can have the happiest moments of your childhood back, they said. We are filled with joy and free of care, and so can you be again, they said. And I believed them. I'm sure I'll regret it— in fact I regret it already— but I still intend to enjoy them. Maybe there was a little truth in what they said. One can always hope.

The cans of chili beans I bought told me no lies, though. We'll fill you up cheaply, but you'll fart like crazy. Accursedly honest little buggers, those beans.

Oh, chocolate chip cookies! Real ones made at home, boo hoo... The packaged ones tend not to measure up to their hype, but they're worth eating anyway.

Are you hearing any news about the Albertson's buyout of Safeway? The early morning checker at the little Safeway across from me now sports a beard, which he said Albertson's allows him, where Safeway didn't. Some of the staff are moving on to other stores. I'm worrying that they'll shut my little store down.

I had chili for supper. I may live to regret it. ;)

They're Famous Amos. I used to buy them fresh at the Famous Amos store on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, so they have an extra touch of nostalgia for me, even when packaged. If it had been Nabisco's or Keebler's on sale I wouldn't have bothered.

The Albertson's-Safeway merger was announced about a year ago I recall, but it's taken them a long time to get it done. A lot of California stores of both chains will have to be divested to comply with antitrust regulations, but I don't know how many will change hands in the northwest.

Haggen is taking over more than 100 California locations, but not the Safeway here. We used to have an Albertson's, but it became a Save Mart more than a decade ago, so our Safeway is safe. Good thing, too. I gather that Haggen (which has never operated in California before so I've never seen one) is pretty expensive.

I don't know the name Haggen. Actually, Albertson's isn't a name I'd heard before coming here. Out in DC, the chain was Giant, and it was a good bunch of stores. Glad your Safeway will remain a Safeway!

Haggen is based in Bellingham, where the company was established in 1933. They might be mostly suburban.

Aha, there's one in Shoreline, about 10-15 minutes up Rte. 99! Interesting.
