My cats are not happy with the rain. They will go out and sit on the porch and watch the water pouring down for a while, and then they want back in but are not content to stay long. Sometimes they will find something with which to entertain themselves for a few minutes- a bit of paper raided from the trash can, for example- but it is never long before one or the other of them is demanding to go back out. It takes a few hours of this before they finally decide that the rain isn't going away anytime soon and that they might as well sleep. Poor cats. They would be much happier living in the desert.

Off to Safeway before dark, headlights reflected in the rainwet streets, the sound of atomized water under the tires, the treetrunks dark and slick, splashes of autumn yellow and red against the green and grey, brief glimpses of roiling brown streams in the arroyos, the clack of windshild wipers and the smack of windblown raindrops against the car, and the tops of pines waving back and forth in their rain dance. Saturday.
