Waiting

I'm waiting to see if this morning's sunrise will be as colorful as last night's sunset. The clouds which caught the light yesterday are still there. (Well, not the same clouds, I'm sure, but clouds of about the same size and type.) The cooling of the last few days is coming to an end, though, and it is expected to get warmer through the weekend.

The deer visited my street again last night. They have not been coming as often since the nearby field was fenced for new construction. It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to get around the neighborhood. They have to spend more time on the streets to travel between those areas that are still open. Also, only one of the streams through the town is flowing along its entire length this year, so most of the deer are probably staying closer to the reliable water supply in the Feather River.

Those who were here must have been among the more adventurous deer. When I went out, they did not start right away, and when they did decide to run, they ran only a few yards, then paused. I stood very still, and they decided that I was not a danger. I couldn't see them very well, as the half moon had already gone behind the trees across the street, but I could make out their dim shapes, and, listening carefully, hear their soft footfalls. They grazed on the roses for a while, then moved off. I think there were three of them. I hope they return on some night when the moon is bright.

I've just been having fun with Brad's latest addition to the site: People who are popular with your friends but are not on your friends list. (This is a link to the actual feature, by the way- a link to the announcement is in the next paragraph.) Turns out that Brad himself is #7 on the list the link turns up for me. Interesting, but it makes me think. When I checked the friends lists of the users who appeared on my list, the same group of people kept showing up on them. If people start using this thing to find new friends, it has the potential to be a real clique-maker. It makes me just a bit uncomfortable. But, as I said- interesting.

By the way- the announcement was posted in [livejournal.com profile] news. I don't have News on my friends list (it isn't updated very often, and it's easy enough to click the link to it that is on the top of the bml pages) but 11 of the people on my friends list do, (as this clever little proggie showed me), so they have already seen this announcement.

There were clouds all day today. A few patches of blue would appear now and then, but it was mostly a sky full of a variety of clouds. Different layers of cloud would be lit differently, so there were dark, steely grey clouds, and little white fluffy clouds, and bright silvery clouds and thin sheets of cloud through which other clouds could be seen.

Usually, grey days are cool days in California, but today was hot, and it gave the town a Southern Gothic feeling. I could imagine all sorts of Tennessee Williams-ish things going on in the decaying hand-built houses and the double-wides, and the cars up on blocks in some yards didn't seem out of place, for once.

Now, there is another one of those spectacularly lurid sunsets that summer's skies here are seldom cloudy enough to sport. Out my side window, I see the half moon beginning to glow through a patch of thin cloud. A sultry night for sultry doings. Stella!
