Drooping

A torpid night has passed, and I wonder at the birds who manage to display their usual energy when all else is wilted in the sultry morning twilight. Well, I exaggerate -- but only slightly. In fact, the air is merely balmy, but so great is the contrast with the cool mornings of recent days that I feel as though I have been transported to the tropics. I think it will be no blankets at all today. Even now the window fans continue to whir, but to little avail. This afternoon, I am sure, I shall be forced to resort to the artifice of air conditioning. As much as I hate the thought of enriching the power mongers, the house is apt to become intolerable without electric intervention. I hold the hope that this year, as last, July and August are at least no worse than June. Now, to sleep, before the sun rises and blasts the world like Satan's own breath.

Air conditioning. I've set the thermostat at 78 degrees, so I won't have to grab my ankles for the guys at Pacific Gas and Electric too often. The house isn't exactly cool, but it's a lot better than outdoors. The nights are no longer cooling off because that weather pattern has set in -- the one in which low pressure areas form in the valley, and then the air from the high deserts flows down the mountains all night, compressing and rising in temperature as it goes. In short, we're meteorologically screwed.

The daddy longlegs spiders who took up residence by my front door are no longer living there. I mean they are there, but no longer living. Their desiccated husks hang in their webs along with those of the final victims they never got to enjoy. It's sad. They ought to have chosen a cooler spot. The front porch gets so much sunlight that by late afternoon even the inside doorknob is uncomfortably hot, and the outside knob painfully so. Spiders are not as smart as kitties. The last cat has found a shady spot for her afternoon naps. Today she interrupted her nap to catch a passing lizard, though, and offered it to me. I declined once again. Wriggling reptile is not on my list of delightful summer treats.

Which reminds me, it's time to pick up some melons of various sorts. If I must endure summer, I will require some nicely chilled compensation.
