Wet

The persistent days of rain have prevented the cat from getting out for her usual exercise, so she's beginning to get cat lunacy, running up and down the hall, leaping onto the backs of chairs, pouncing on phantom mice, and opening every cupboard door she can reach. So much pent up energy! If I could get her to run on a treadmill, she would probably produce enough electricity to power my reading lamp, and I wouldn't have to worry about breakable objects being bumped from the shelves she insists on exploring. She's quieted down a bit now, having worn herself out (and some of the upholstery, as well), and is napping in her favorite chair. I expect that she'll be up and ready for a new round of frolic before morning, though.

It appears as though the year will end by being dissolved, as the rain is now being predicted to continue through Friday. There have been times here when it rained every day for weeks on end, so I'm imagining not seeing the sun until February. I don't think I'd be pleased at that. I know for sure that the cat wouldn't. My preference would be for a sunny New Year's Day. I begin to suspect that I won't get it, though. I'm willing to settle for the power not going off. That, and a big bowl of popcorn.

Oh, the trash truck had trouble with its compactor device this Tuesday morning, and then sat idling fifty feet from my widow for about 45 minutes, making a very annoying noise, so I got to sleep late, woke late, still didn't get enough sleep, and I've been trying to catch up ever since. I probably never will.

More of the Same

It's getting colder again. The snow level is expected to drop to 3000 feet. A much wetter storm is on the way. At our elevation, this will probably mean some furious rain, and maybe some hail and sleet. Sleet is nasty stuff, but at least it never stays around for long. I was hoping to be able to get out for some shopping this week, but it looks like I won't be able. The hole in my sheet is getting bigger, and my toe gets caught in it. The task can't be put off much longer. I wish I knew how to darn.

Everybody else in the house has been feeling poorly for the last couple of days, and that is keeping me busier than usual. Well, everybody but the cat. She is currently having her anticipated morning fit. She went out for a few minutes, but was unable to work off any of her energy, her distaste for falling water having confined her to the small covered area of the porch. She came back in after a short while, and decided that it was time to romp. I hope she doesn't wake everybody up.

Only three days left of the year. My brain feels as though it were stuffed with wool, except that it isn't warm. Maybe it's stuffed with steel wool. I hope the cat soon exhausts herself with her games, so I can go to sleep.

Storm

The snow is now expected to fall as low as 2000 feet, so we will be right at the edge of it. So far, there is only rain, and wind, and pavements gleaming with reflected light. I missed most of the day, sleeping late again after having been wakeful much of the morning. There is a lot of free-floating anxiety abroad right now. Every newscast and daily paper is fraught with it. It's as though a pebble has been cast into the pond of the world, the waves of its unexpected fall rippling out to perturb everything. Unable to see the stars from this cloud-shrouded place, I nevertheless know they are still there, oblivious, but equally trapped in the relentless regimen of matter in time. I'm not remembering whatever dreams I am having. Maybe that's good.
