At the moment I have 34 browser tabs loaded with pages from about a dozen different websites. I was looking for something and kept finding other things. Let's see, I've got (among other things) somebody's Flickr picture of the long-closed Tower Theatre on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles where I saw "Bonnie and Clyde" with an audience that displayed shock at the violence of the movie; The Wikipedia article on artist Millard Sheets, who made the murals which decorated the outside of the auditorium at the high school I went to; A web page about the Millard Sheets Gallery at Fairplex (the name given, at sometime since I left the area, to the L.A. County Fairgrounds in Pomona); A few more Sheets pages, including the first results page of a search on him at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Galley at Scripps College (Records 0-3 of 46); A load of landscape paintings from the web site of the Virtual Museum of Canada; A page about Frank Tolles Chamberlin, an artist who was one of Millard Sheets' early teachers; A page about The Boom Boom Room, a Laguna Beach gay bar which claims to be the oldest such establishment on the west coast; The listing from the Forbes 400 Richest Americans for 2006 of B. Wayne Hughes, a somewhat older alumnus of my high school who I think may have lived down the hill from our house; A big, big page of obituaries of people who died in December, 2004, including a number swept away by the Asian tsunami that month. Meanwhile, I've also got my other browser open, downloading some pictures. How does this shit happen? I have a life! Really, I do! I just can't seem to get around to it when the Internets got their fangs in me.

OK, the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College has some nice stuff. The collection of Japanese prints available on-line is very nice, and there is a small selection of paintings by such artists as Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, George Inness and Albert Pinkham Ryder. There is also a dandy collection of western prints, including a number of Audubon's birds. Altogether, the site displays about 6000 of the gallery's total of 7500 items. Worth a look.
