As far as I'm concerned, May doesn't get any better than day after day of mostly cloudy sky and light rain. And now that our cherry tree is dead I don't even have the worry that, because the cool dampness is keeping the bees away, the blossoms are not getting pollinated. I guess it's true that getting rid of things can reduce stress. The down side is that we won't get cherries from the back yard anymore, but would have to buy them if we want them. I'm not sure how costly they'd be. They do grow locally, so it might be possible to get some at a reasonable price from the farmer's market they hold in town once a week—provided the wet doesn't destroy too much of the crop. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the cherry-killing weather enough to make up for not getting any cherries.

Speaking of reasonable prices: Wartime donuts, fourteen cents a half dozen. 1943 was a bit before my time, but I remember when one could sensibly bet a nickle to a donut. What would it be now? I haven't bought a donut in ages.

Maybe the partly cloudy night will be partly mooney by now. Must go see.
