Wet!

Not only did the clouds which gathered last evening bring summer rain, but it's been raining steadily and copiously for three hours. This is a stronger storm than most of those few we had last winter. It's fairly warm rain, of course, and I've been hearing lots of birds who sound happy about the unexpected opportunity for a bath this morning. I don't know if it's going to last long enough to turn the lawn green. It's been nice to listen to rain falling, though, whether it amounts to much as irrigation or not. In fact, I'm going to turn off the machine and let the sound of the rain sing me to sleep now.

Fresh

The rain lasted past noon, after which there were big fluffy clouds floating through deliciously cool air. The hummingbirds came out and checked all the wet, sunlit flowers, and shiny crows perched atop brightened pines, cawing loudly at the chuckling woodpeckers below them. Everything smelled fresh. It was cool enough to leave all the windows open all afternoon, so now the house smells fresh too. Summer wouldn't drag so if we could arrange one of these storms about every ten days. And by evening I did spy some hints of green in the brown parts of the lawn. The ground may be sufficiently soaked that this greening will continue for another day or two. The heat will be back sooner, of course, so I intend to get as much enjoyment as possible out of this very cool night.
