Fatal

This afternoon as I was typing, I suddenly felt something soft under my finger. I looked down and saw that a small insect had alighted on my keyboard's "N" key just as I typed the word "sign." The insect was still moving, but had obviously been fatally injured by my falling digit. It was a beautiful little bug, perhaps a tiny moth. Its wings were intricately patterned in shades of brown from very light to very dark. I felt bad about having injured it, and hated to finish it off, but there was nothing else to be done. After I put the bug out of its misery, there was still a damp smear on the "N" key. It gradually came off as I typed, absorbed by my skin, I suppose.

Later I went outside to see if the gray cat needed any fresh water or food. The first bee of the season appeared and buzzed around me, as though threatening revenge on behalf of the insect kingdom for my destructive, careless act. I didn't get stung, and after a couple of minutes the bee flew away, off to pollinate the early flowers, most likely. I put fresh water in the cat's bowl and added some food to his dish while he watched me from several feet away. I went indoors and he came onto the porch and ate a bit and then returned to his nap which I had disturbed. I went back to my keyboard, and was very careful to keep an eye out for anything flying about.
