Portia continues to be fuller of surprises than the other cats I've had. Yesterday afternoon I was making a sandwich while she sat nearby, waiting to see if she was going to get something too. I went to the refrigerator to fetch condiments, and when I turned around I saw that Portia had leaped onto the kitchen counter, and had snagged a slice of bread from my plate and was dragging it away.

If there had been something on the bread— mayonnaise, perhaps, or a bit of meat or tuna— it might have made sense that she was stealing it, but it was just plain bread. I don't know if she intended to eat it or if she had simply decided that a slice of bread would be a dandy cat toy. I yelled at her, very loudly, and she abandoned the prize, quite losing interest in it. I guess I'll never know what she would have done with it had I not interrupted the heist. Weird cat.

Yesterday was the peak of the current hot spell, though the ten day forecast proposes that we endure highs in the nineties until the tenth day. I disapprove of this proposal, but nothing can be done to change it. Mark Twain would be so disappointed by our lack of progress.

One of yesterday's heat-induced naps resulted in a neck displacement which continues to cause me considerable discomfort. If the couch were six inches longer this wouldn't happen. Size does matter!

Despite the heat I must tomorrow venture forth to shop yet again. The laundry detergent has run out, for one thing, and the hot weather demands that much laundering be done. My lack of energy has thus far delayed the assembling of a list of other goods that I require. I intend to schedule an extra fifteen minutes for the trip. If I must go out, at least I can have some extra time to enjoy the air conditioning in the stores.
