Burnt Offerings

Wiped out by the relentlessness of the heat, I'm spending most afternoons sleeping. Only the night is tolerable this summer. The hottest days so far this year haven't been any hotter than the hottest days of recent years, but the coolest days have not been as cool. The nights haven't cooled off as much as usual, either. It's the lack of variation that is most distressing. Today was actually the coolest day in more than a week, and it was above 90. Tomorrow another heat wave begins. This could turn out to be the hottest July on record, and August is usually hotter than July. The long afternoon naps might continue into September. I wish I could just hibernate, and wake up in October.
