Farah got to see a young possum the other night. It's only the second time I've seen a possum since I moved here myself, so it was a treat for both of us. Farah was quite inquisitive. The possum was about her size, and she didn't appear to be afraid of it at all. She watched it from several feet away as it ate some food from her bowl, then she followed it when it went to get a drink from the bowl by the lilac bush. I had to speak to her from the window, as I was afraid she might decide to either attack it, or at least try to play one of her rough games with it.

Farah tries to play rough games with Alger, who is considerably larger than she is, and he doesn't like it one bit. He hisses and growls at her, and sometimes swipes at her with a paw, but she often persists in tormenting him until I distract her. She's gotten awfully bold, and I didn't want her damaging the possum. While I was talking to her, the visitor finished its drink, then made its way across the back yard and out through the gap in the fence. Tragedy averted. After being stalked by a cat, I doubt the possum will visit the yard again, though, not even for the easy meal.

It's been another mostly sunny but cool day. I actually had to turn on the furnace for a while last night. The house just doesn't gather enough heat on cool days to keep it warm through the night. I was lucky that the mild summer made it unnecessary to use the air conditioner more than a few times. I'm afraid I won't be so lucky when it comes to winter's cold. I'll have to get ready to pay higher utility bills.
