A few nights ago I mentioned seeing four deer walking along my street, with one of them limping badly. I just saw the limping deer walking down the street in the rain. Its herd is nowhere in sight. They must have abandoned it because it couldn't keep up. I think it's a young doe. She probably won't survive much longer. With her injury it won't be able to jump fences, and that will limit her feeding area.

She will also have a hard time keeping out of the way of traffic. With dusk arriving so early there are quite a few cars out after nightfall, and with the rain the roads are slick and shiny in the headlights. Deer are hard to see under those conditions. She'd be better off somewhere outside of town, where a mountain lion could perform a quick killing. That would probably be better than getting hit by a car and slowly dying in a wet ditch on a cold night.
