It's very disorienting to wake up in the middle of the night when you didn't even know you'd gone to sleep. My windows were still open and the air had turned chilly. The night was full of cricket chirps, the trees full of moonlight and shadows.

I went outside to let the breeze blow the last of the sleep from my head. An owl hooted amid rustling leaves and whispering pine needles.

No windows along the street other than my own were lit from within, but the houses wore moonlight like a shimmering veil across their faces, and here and there a pane reflected its gleam. Stranger than waking when you didn't know you were asleep is knowing you are awake and walking into a dream.
