The first cicada began to buzz at 7:07 P.M., and night soon fell. I didn't get around to feeding the back yard cats until dusk. When I went out I noticed the last few inches of a squirrel's tail lying on the sidewalk. It was just the furry tip, so my guess is that the squirrel itself got away— though how it will fare without the tip of its tail I don't know. Maybe the bushy part of the tail can grow back, like the tails of some lizards. Meanwhile, the cats are having a lot of fun playing with it.

It looks as though the warmer than usual weather will be sticking around for several days at the least. It's very unlikely now that September will bring any rain. It usually doesn't, but I always hope that it will. Now I have to begin hoping that October will bring some rain. It occasionally does, but not always. The longer the rain delays, the longer it takes for me to get rid of my summer lethargy. There's nothing like a good rainstorm to restore my energy.

The moon has grown quite large. Five nights hence it will be full, but it is already quite bright. The cats will prowl tonight, and so will the raccoons. I've found raccoon dirt in the cats' water bowls for the last three nights. I don't know what the raccoons have been washing in it, and I don't think I want to know. I'm just glad I didn't see anything other than dirt in them.
