Merely Damp

It was a splendidly gray day with neither sunrise nor sunset, but it failed to bring more rain than a few sprinkles and some mist. Still, this was enough to keep the downspout on the back porch dripping all day. It's dripping now, providing a slow beat for the song of the frogs. The crickets must be too damp to chirp, but the woodpeckers chattered for a while before deep dusk silenced them.

It's going to be another chilly night, and the clouds are expected to remain tomorrow, though perhaps they will permit a little sunlight to break through. I could do without the sunlight if its absence helps to save the dampness of the soil a few more days. There are still foxtails to be pulled up. I never got around to them because the pollen left me so lethargic this year, but I think the loose pine pollen is gone now. The rain gathered a lot of it into yellow smears along the edge of the road and the driveway. A lot more is probably sinking into the soil under the grass, too. Good riddance!

My sleep schedule continues to be erratic, and I had another unintended nap this afternoon. Falling asleep on the couch is not at all good for my neck. In fact it was a crick in my neck that woke me up in time to see that there was no sunset, so the neck clearly agrees with me. If the couch were even four inches longer it wouldn't be so unpleasant to sleep on. Well, maybe I'm old enough to start shrinking and the problem will solve itself in a couple of years. In the meantime, ouch!
