Evening

Streaky clouds turned pink as evening arrived, and then for a while the world was dark, waiting for moonrise. In that placid interval I watched the stars emerge, and the cool air was unscented by smoke. Tomorrow will be clear and chilly, and by tomorrow night the fireplaces will probably be burning again. But for one evening there was perfect autumn weather. It was worth waiting for, and I'm glad I didn't sleep through it.
