Quiet

Today I got quite a bit of raking done, but about half the back yard is still strewn with leaves. No heavy winds are due, so I don't expect the raked areas to get covered over again before I get most of the remainder raked. Most of the leaves on my oak are still green, and virtually all the walnut tree's leaves are as well, so I've got a lot of raking ahead.

I don't know why the neighbors' oaks have dropped over half of their leaves already, but most of what I've raked so far has blown in from their trees. I'm hoping that a big wind will come when my oak is ready to shed and it will blow all my leaves into the neighbors' yards. That will even things out.

Tonight I'm doing triage on my shopping list for tomorrow. I don't want to go too far above my usual weekly budget, even though there are some good bargains this week on things I'd like to stock up on. I guess I don't really need ten cans of olives, even below half the usual price. I can probably make five last until the next sale.

It sure is quiet out now that most of the insects have quit buzzing and chirping. The sound of cars travels farther on these chilly nights, too, so distance is emphasized. I hear them pass and then fade for along time, and then the silence returns. Later there will be almost none passing, and it will be just me and the handful of bugs, and the silent stars and moon. I'm looking forward to it.
