Commemoration

August 26 is the anniversary of the date in 1920 on which Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment to the Constitution, finally securing the right of women to vote throughout the United States. The Internets tell me that this is also National Dog Day (rob a bank this afternoon) but one of these is considerably more important than the other. To commemorate the more important event, here is a quote from something that suffragist Alice Duer Miller wrote in 1915:

"Why We Don't Want Men to Vote


"Because man's place is in the army.

"Because no really manly man wants to settle any question otherwise than by fighting about it.

"Because if men should adopt peaceable methods women will no longer look up to them.

"Because men will lose their charm if they step out of their natural sphere and interest themselves in other matters than feats of arms, uniforms, and drums.

"Because men are too emotional to vote. Their conduct at baseball games and political conventions shows this, while their innate tendency to appeal to force renders them unfit for government."

From the perspective of 2015 we might be justified in adding "Because some day a whole bunch of men are going to want to vote for Donald Trump for President." Miller could not have known that Donald Trump would ever exist, of course, but if she had I'm sure she'd have added this to her list.

Dissipate

Looks like I'll have to be paying more I'd hoped for kitty litter. The new supermarket ads came out today and nobody has the stuff as cheap as it was at Safeway last Friday. If Portia would get constipated for a while I could save some cash, but no, when she has to go she has to go. Maybe Safeway will have the other brand of kitty litter on sale next week, but this week I'll have to pay about two bucks extra. I'll buy only one box.

I can't remember the last time I fixed an entire meal. The hot weather has really diminished my willingness to do any cooking. I was thinking about making something complete tonight, but just didn't feel like it even though it's gotten a bit cooler. Instead I just ate half of a cantaloupe, and now I'm hungry again. I'll probably either open a can of beans or microwave a couple of frozen burritos. It's unlikely that I'd survive very long without Mexican food.

We had quite a few clouds hanging about today. I'm going to go out and see if they've dissipated. After that I just might dissipate for a while, myself.
