We've had some splendid clouds today. Earlier some of them were mimicking feathers, and others looked like giant, white fish covered with scales. A short time ago I saw a pair of them with long appendages moving ahead of them so they looked like enormous crabs. The water creatures are appropriate, as the clouds are gathering to bring us the storm that should arrive early tomorrow, or perhaps sometime tonight.
I must soon close the windows as the afternoon warmth is fading rapidly. I have been reluctant to do so, as not only has the fresh air been delightful, but a short time ago somebody in the neighborhood began barbecuing hot dogs, and the summer evening scent of them and the charcoal, and the sharp tangy aroma of mustard which managed to accompany them, have induced a pleasant nostalgia. I don't know how long it will be before another day mild enough to allow the windows to be open will arrive, and I hate to let this one go, but the evening is descending, and the air coming in has taken on a decidedly autumnal chill.
There's always the chance, however slim, that trick-or-treaters will soon arrive. I think it's been about three years since we've had any, but this year could prove to be different. Maybe there are kids at that barbecue, waiting to go out and haunt the nocturnal streets. Feeding kids before they go out is a good way to prevent them from devouring all their candy before they even get home, which is why I'm thinking there just might be some tonight. I'll find out soon enough, I suppose.
My own dinner isn't going to be as interesting as hot dogs. I've got some pasta to use up, and a yellow squash that is apt to lose its integrity if I don't cook it immediately. I'll have to root around in the cupboard to see if there's anything else to go with it. Shopping tomorrow, hopefully without any excessive drenching.
