Mild

A bee came to my back yard today to enjoy the lilac blossoms and the fair weather. The sky wore long trails of blue-gray clouds, but they hovered above the mountains and the valley, and here between there was more sunshine than shade, while the mild air was scented with grass and spring flowers. It didn't get warm enough to leave the windows open more than an hour, but knowing that torrid days will come soon enough, and remembering the sharp chill of recent weeks, I took pleasure in the brief mildness.

It will cool considerably tomorrow, and rain in the evening remains a possibility, but the approaching storm is not very wet, though very cold for the time of year, and there could be a few more inches of fresh snow higher in the mountains. This is the sort of storm that sometimes brings hail or flurries of popcorn snow to this elevation. Both melt off rapidly in sunlight, but if they fall by night they might be on the ground for quite a while. My footsteps might get to crunch for a bit, which is something I enjoy very much.

Rain or not I should be going to the stores tomorrow afternoon. My shopping list is not too long this week, both because there's not much on sale and because I'm running a bit short of cash and don't want to take any more out of the bank until next month's check arrives. Fortunately one store has ten pound bags of russets on sale for $2.99, so I'll be able to eat lots of potatoes this week. Sour cream is on sale, too, so many of those potatoes will be baked. Once the weather warms up again, which could begin happening by the end of the week, those will have to go off the menu, unless I bake them late at night when the extra heat from the oven will be beneficial rather than a problem.

Something has begun playing havoc with my ears. Every time I chew I hear popping noises in the right one and sometimes in the left as well. When I yawn it sounds like a little motorboat is trapped in one or the other. I've had this before, but it's been ages since the last time and I'd hoped it was gone forever. So far it has never affected my hearing, but it's annoying as hell.

Sadly, no English people will be murdered on television tonight. I'll have to find something else to watch. There might be some Russians and Americans crashing into things. That's usually enjoyable.
