Autumn's Impossible Desires
Oct. 7th, 2016 10:35 pmIndian summer-like weather has arrived. With windows open the house got up to a balmy 70 degrees this afternoon, and will probably not get much below 66 degrees tonight, so the furnace can remain off. I'll get a few more days of this before the autumn chill returns, though the nights will continue to grow quite nippy throughout. The days won't get chilly again until the middle of the week, and the long range forecast is still predicting a 60% chance of rain for three days running beginning next Friday. The furnace will definitely have to be turned back on then, but at least this warm spell is saving me a few days of costly fuel.
It's possible that we'll get more warm spells as autumn progresses. They are not unusual here, and I don't mind warm spells in the fall as long as there are some nice rainy spells between them. We also need at least a few really cold nights to bring out the color of the autumn foliage. An entirely mild fall is terribly dull and many of the leaves tend to turn brown or gray rather than red or yellow. It's worth burning a bit of gas for a few nights if it makes for a more colorful season.
A bit of autumnal nostalgia has been insinuating itself into my mind of late, as it often does this time of year. There used to be a coffee shop (if memory serves, it was called Nibb's) on west Fifth Street in downtown Los Angeles, They made a flame broiled hamburger served with barbecue sauce on it that was one of the best in L.A., and L.A. has always been blessed with good hamburgers. I think the last time I was there was in the late 1960s. Then I seldom went downtown for quite a few years, and when I went back in the early 1980s the place was gone, replaced by an Asian restaurant. For days now I haven't been able to get those hamburgers out of my mind. It's terrible to get a craving for something that can no longer be acquired. There's no substitute that's remotely as good anywhere around here. Makes me wish I had a time machine.
I guess I'll settle for a couple of microwaved burritos tonight. Sic transit gloria mundi.
