An unpleasant surprise turned up Sunday evening: there was an ant infestation in the kitchen drawer I keep candy in. Most candy is now in packaging that could probably survive a nuclear blast, but I had a couple of rolls of Necco wafers that have old fashioned waxed paper packaging, and the ants had invaded both rolls, devouring a surprising amount of each. I cleaned the drawer out, killing every ant I could find, and returned the nuke-safe candies to their places, but I fear the Neccos will be unsalvageable.

I know many people will not consider the Neccos a loss at all, as they are a widely despised confection ("chalky" is the epithet I most often hear hurled at them) but I have fond memories of them from childhood, when they were one of the few five cent candies that you could make last all afternoon, which was important to me, since nickels weren't that easy to come by. More recently I've come to appreciate them for being something I could eat varied amounts of at any one sitting, so I could make a roll last for days, or even weeks. I suppose the ants like them for the same reason. Ants and I apparently have some things in common. One thing we don't have in common is that I have not been crushed to death by a giant hand for invading someone else's candy supply! Sad for them that their judgement was not as good as their taste.

The other misfortune Sunday was that there was a lunar eclipse, and I forgot about it. By the time I'd gone out to look at the moon, the eclipse was over. It would have been a good night for seeing it, too, as the clouds that had hung around all the sultry afternoon soon broke up as nightfall approached. Of course, my eyesight has grown so bad that the whole event would have been quite blurry, but I still could have enjoyed remembering how eclipses used to look. The next one won't be until November, and that time of year it's almost invariably cloudy all night here. Bummer.

Still tired, and still not feeling very good, and still facing several days of unpleasantly warm temperatures. Still have things to do that are annoying and tedious. I will soon go to sleep and not have to think about any of this for a few hours. First I'll go out into the cool night for a while and sit in the light of the uneclipsed moon. I don't think the mockingbird is out there though. I haven't heard him for a couple of nights. Maybe he finally found a mate. That would be nice. At least somebody would be doing well.
