Reset Forty-One, Day Nineteen
Jun. 13th, 2022 03:16 amIf there was any more rain on Sunday I slept through it, though not very well. Although the day was a bit cooler than Saturday, the apartment had a lot of accumulated heat from a nearly sultry Saturday night, and I was restless, going through several brief periods of wakefulness before finally rising, somewhat dazed, in the early afternoon. I felt a bit better by evening, and even made a good sized dinner that included some frozen fried rice with egg and edamame and a few other vegetable bits. The evening cooled off nicely, and it's supposed to drop below sixty tonight, so I hope to sleep a bit better. The fan and a couple of open windows have gotten the apartment down to 74 so far, and I'm hoping it will be below 70 by bedtime.
The coming week has a few hot days, including one triple-digit high, but most of the nights should be fairly cool, which will help a lot. The week after that starts edging up again, but that's the week that brings the northern hemisphere summer solstice, on June 21, so it's to be expected. Pure hell is likely to break loose after that, but I'd rather not think about it.
So Monday, I ought to do something, but probably won't. My lethargy is equaled only by my anxiety, and I'm feeling more and more like a mixed metaphor. I'm a deer caught in the headlights while twisting in the wind. Something is going to break, and the only question is whether I break it myself deliberately or something comes along and breaks it for me. Neither is likely to be pleasant. In the meantime, I'll just keep escaping into the digital simulacrum of the world. Maybe if I do it enough I'll get lucky and turn virtual myself.
I mentioned this short film yesterday but didn't link to it. Artie Shaw's recording of "Begin the Beguine" was released in 1938, but I don't know if this film was made the same year or a bit later. This was his second band (he kept quitting and coming back every couple of years) so I don't think it could have been later than 1940. It's one of the iconic songs of its era, and there's hardly a documentary on the period in which it doesn't make at least a brief appearance. I am especially fond of the brief but evocative saxophone solo by Tony Pastor (Antonio Pestritto) who later formed his own successful band.
