It appears that I can't sleep in the late morning anymore. Every day I wake up around eleven, whether I'm fully rested or not. It's mostly not, of course. Thursday was mostly not, though not as bad as the few previous days. As is usual in that state, I remained muddled and fairly unattentive for the rest of the day. Dinner (a sandwich again) and darkness brought me back to the outskirts of reality and competence, but by that time I was tired but not yet sleepy, which is a state I'd rather not be in.

The mockingbird brought a bit of nocturnal music, and the cooling air made sitting outdoors pleasant enough to keep me out there for quite a while. My mind mostly wandered through thickets of memory, but brought back no souvenirs. My thoughts went to the past, and all I got was this lousy sentence. But at least it cooled off once the sun was down. The current forecast is predicting eight days in a row of triple digit highs starting Sunday, plus warm nights. But there's been very little smoke from the big fire in Calaveras County, and maybe it will be controlled by the time the really hot days arrive. And I still have fresh cherries, so my odds of survival are probably at least fifty-fifty. This time of year that's about as good as it gets around here.

I think I'm finally sleepy enough to go to bed. I expect I'll wake up before noon and be unable to get back to sleep again. The days grow monotonous. So what else is new.
