The less torrid temperature Sunday failed to energize me. I still haven't made any shopping arrangements, having spent most of the afternoon and evening in a state of torpor. It remains to be seen if today's expected high of a mere 86 will be sufficiently mild to energize me. Of course if I don't get to sleep fairly soon it won't make much difference, as I'll be getting up too late to get anything done anyway.

However, this single milder day is to be followed by some true horror, particularly by night, as the lows will be in the seventies, and Wednesday night is predicted to drop only to 77. I'll be unable to cool the apartment with the fan and open windows for about five nights running, so the air conditioner is going to get a long workout. Given the fact that these nights will follow very hot days, the stress on the power grid is apt to lead to rolling blackouts. Usually we can count on surplus power for the northwest during such times, but the northwest is also enduring massive heat, so there will be less surplus available, even though much of that region lacks power hungry air conditioning. What air conditioning they do have will be gobbling it up.

To top it off, California now has two major fires going, one a couple of hundred miles south near Yosemite, and one a bit nearer to the north, on the Oregon border. Today is to be cloudy, which this time of year brings a likelihood of lightning, so more fires could get started. I suspect that the only reason we haven't had any big fires in out region this year is because so much that was burnable hereabout was consumed over the last two years.

I now suspect that my dinner of crackers and peanut butter several hours ago was insufficient, as was the ice cream I ate later, but it's too late to be eating now. I'd rather sleep than eat at this point. I'll quiet my stomach with a bit of extra chocolate.
