Sunday was a hot blur, but not as hot as it's about to get. Our week in Hell has begun. Today is to reach 111 degrees, tomorrow 112, Wednesday 108, Thursday and Friday both 110, and Saturday 100. Tonight will get down to 72 degrees, but the next four nights will all have lows in the high seventies, and even Friday night will only get down to 75. This means that the air conditioner won't get any long rests after tonight until late next Saturday night. I hope it can survive. If it doesn't, I probably won't either.

Of course there is one thing that could give the air conditioner a rest: a power outage. The state's energy commission thinks outages are likely, and has been asking us to minimize appliance use after four o'clock in the afternoon, to help accommodate demand for air conditioning. Also they want us to boost the thermostats a couple of degrees. I've been setting mine at 77 this summer, but I guess I could put it up to 80 in the afternoons.

Right now I'm just using the fan and open windows to capture the outside air which is in the low seventies for the last time this week. I've also been downing a lot of icy drinks. My stomach is not happy about it. It never used to complain so much, bur then neither did I. Old age is making us both cranky. I guess it's a good thing I no longer have a lawn to chase kids off of. I'm pretty much just a lonely indoor curmudgeon. The only thing I've yelled at all day is the computer. The fly who was in here yesterday must have died, as I haven't seen it. Sigh. No company at all, not even an ant. Maybe another fly will get in today. If it's 111 degrees out there I don't think I could blame it.

Happy Labor Day.
