Sep. 10th, 2022

Friday's single striking event was moonrise. When I woke up a bit after noon I looked out the window as I usually do and saw that the air was dirtier than usual. It had to be smoke from a fire, and I expected to smell it when I went out, but I didn't, so it was being dispersed at a high altitude, not hugging the ground. I forgot about it, as I do most things these days, until I finally got around to going out to the mailbox, which was after nightfall. The sight that greeted me then was the moon a few degrees above the horizon, glowing a deep orange that was almost red. It seemed both apocalyptic and glamorous. Such a lovely color for catastrophe to generate.

The particular catastrophe the brought the splendid horror to Friday's moonrise is called the Mosquito fire, and it is burning in Placer County, northeast of Sacramento, so not too far from here but far enough not to constitute a threat to the mini-metropolis. So far this year the fires haven't been nearly as extensive as those last year, though the fire season now runs well into fall so has a long way to go and 2022 could easily catch up to earlier years. Southern California is having a worse season than the north, and the La Nina condition that contributed to it has brought a tropical storm that threatened to be catastrophic in its own right, but weakened enough to be no more than an inconvenience. At least they got some rain, and their heat wave is over.

The worst of the heat wave is over here as well, though it is still warmer than normal for September, at least by day. The hot nights have ended for now, though, for which we will all be grateful I'm sure. Now if the Mosquito fire can be controlled soon, and no other big fires get started, we can have something resembling normal conditions. For now the fire is still threatening close to 5,000 houses in small mountain towns. It's too bad that the rain isn't going to get this far north, though if the storm had been that strong Southern California would currently be flooded.

Once again I didn't feel like cooing dinner, so I just ate some crackers and peanut butter, then rapidly grew exhausted and a bit after ten o'clock went to take a nap. The nap lasted longer than I'd expected, and I didn't wake up again until four o'clock this morning. I suppose I should eat something, but I still don't feel like cooking. It feels like it's going to be a weird day, whatever I do. I'm going to try to arrange shopping trip for tomorrow, Sunday usually being a slow day at the stores, and the store with the Monday sale doesn't have anything I want this week anyway. It's best to get it over with.
