Reset Forty-Nine, Day Two Hundred Nine
Dec. 21st, 2023 08:51 amWednesday was a big dinner night, with stuff bought Monday, and it turned semi-catastrophic, thanks to the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing when I cook. Everything was either overdone or underdone, and my attempts at repair just made things worse. I still ended up stuffing myself, and then got too tired to clean up so went to bed and slept what felt like a very long time. When I looked at the clock (phone) it looked like 2:18, and I became quite distraught, having expected the night to be just about over by the time I woke. After lying in bed being sad for a few more minutes I noticed light seeping under the blinds and went to the window to see if someone or something had triggered my security light, and it was morning. I went back to the clock and saw that it said 7:21, so it had been my morning eyeblur that had misled me.
I've now spent a couple of hours looking at the mess from last night's dinner, and have even thought about cleaning at least part of it, and maybe I'll get around to that in time. Right now I'm dealing with some indigestion, which I attribute to both last night's dinner and the fact that I ate three of the mini-cupcakes I bought Monday, though I scraped the excessively sweet holiday frosting off of them first. Tuesday I tried salvaging the cupcakes by creaming some butter and cocoa powder and mixing it with the frosting, but it didn't taste very good, and the color was utterly revolting, so I'm just tossing the bad frosting. But the cupcakes themselves are apparently indigestible, so a bad deal all around.
While lying awake in bed last night I had a nostalgic run of interesting thoughts which I thought might make an interesting journal entry, but now I find I can't organize them satisfactorily. A few years ago I could have, I'm sure. My brain is clearly over the hill and well on its way to the cliff at the bottom of the other side. The other day I vacuumed and when I went to empty the dust container I misread the instructions and opened the bottom of the container at the same time I lifted it off the machine, and the mass of dust fell all over the lower part of the machine and back onto the floor. It took a long time to clean most of it up, but there's still a bit stuck in parts of the machinery. In my defense, the instructions and accompanying drawings are rather ambiguous and easily misinterpreted, but still, old brain is clearly not what it once was. I'd trade it in if I could.
We're to get a mild and sunny day today, though it should cool back down to more Decembery highs by the weekend. The next instance of rain has been shoved back to next Wednesday, and then the first few days of January could be wet as well, though still a bit warmer than normal. Warmer than normal does not bode well for snow in the mountains. But we have three months of official winter left, as today is the Winter Solstice. Yes the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, for those keeping track, is this very day. I might make some cocoa with a shot of brandy this evening in celebration. As good an excuse as any.
