Sunday evening I got to bed by eleven o'clock, expecting that I'd sleep at least four hours and would have a pretty good chance of then extending it another two or three hours, as I've been able to do that a few times in the recent past, but instead I woke up at two o'clock after only three hours of sleep, and despite trying I was unable to get back to sleep again, so I got up at three this morning, and I've been awake ever since.
The reason I wanted to sleep as long as possible was because today is plumbing day. Very shortly, a crew will arrive to tear up the concrete floor in the apartment next to mine, to reach the broken water line that must be repaired before we can get our hot water back. There will be a jackhammer. Indoors. It will be loud. I will get no more sleep until the job is done. And I'm tired.
Welcome to hell, I guess. There will be a jackhammer on the other side of the wall, and the compressor will probably be parked right outside my bedroom window. A veritable Scylla and Charybdis of racket! My long-prophesied doom is here at last! To add to the misery, the mini-metropolis is under a flood watch today, not from broken pipes but due to heavy rain that fell overnight and more rain expected to fall today. It isn't raining here at the moment, but the ground is saturated, and the flood channels are full of stuff coming down from the mountains. All it would take is a full cell parked over the town dropping water for half an hour or so and I could have an inch or so in here like I did a few years ago. I'm really not up to it.
I think I'm going to lie down and at least try to relax for a bit before the ruckus begins. I just ate some ramen for breakfast, and maybe I won't get reflux from it. Yikes.
