It was nice to have windows open in the daytime Friday, for the first time in months. It was also nice not to hear the air conditioner running all the time. The apartment did get warmer than it was outside, as it usually does in late summer's and early autumn's cooling days, but I didn't even turn the fan on until rather early Saturday morning, when merely having the windows open had failed to get it below 74 degrees. It's down to 72 now, and it's ridiculous how this simple thing manages to take the edge off of my melancholy. I'm dangerously close to feeling happy, and that's just asking for trouble. I'd better think about something dismal, like my cooking.

For diner Friday I microwaved some artichoke and spinach ravioli, and put half a package of frozen shrimp in the real oven. With a bit of yellow squash they made fairly impressive meal which I didn't really cook, thank goodness. As I are, I thought about how much better it was than the stuff I've made for myself of late. Since it still wasn't very good, you can surmise what my own cooking is like. Thank goodness for frozen entrees.

We did get some rain overnight, though I think it's been more of a mist with intermittent drizzle than an actual rainfall. I never heard anything dripping in the downspout, but woke up from a long midnight nap to a stuffy room and when I opened the windows could smell the damp outside. Since then I've heard an occasional drip from the eaves, but no flurries of rain or multiple spatterings, and still nothing from the downspout. Now that morning light is coming into the sky I can see that there is extensive dampness on the ground, and a few actual puddles, but also several dry patches. I don't know of we'll get an actual rainfall, but I'd like to see some. I don't feel especially hopeful.

There has been enough damp to weigh down the pokeweed in my back yard and make it bend away from my window, giving me the clearest view of sky back there I've had in months, and I see some pale blue patches with white clouds in them, meaning the rising sun is getting through in the south. The storm is breaking up, then. Unless there's a band of clouds with more rain headed this way, this could be the end of it. Too bad. A bit of real rain would be nice, though, for this neck of the woods, very un-Augustan.

The breeze through the back window is now feeling quite chilly, and is bringing a bit of smoky odor. I don't know if its from wildfire or if somebody has gotten so cold they've lit a fire in their fireplace, but either way I'd rather not smell it. I think I'll close the window and turn off the fan. It's down to seventy in here now, which should keep me comfortable for a few hours at least. It's to be 74 today, then down to 58 tonight, but will get back up to 88 Sunday. Yikes. Autumn weather whiplash came early this year. Really nice for a change though.
