51/83: Rumble Rumble
Dec. 5th, 2024 11:19 amI don't think I slept well at all Wednesday night, even though I felt very tired when I got to bed. I felt like I just tossed and turned all night, but maybe I slept and simply dreamed that I was tossing and turning. Asleep or awake, my brain was in full hamster wheel mode, and is still running now even though I ought to be utterly exhausted. It's all too weird to even think about. So I won't.
But then today brought two surprises. The first was the arrival of the first of two hoodies I ordered from J. C. Penney's just day before yesterday. It wasn't supposed to get here until next week, but about an hour after I heard a sharp double knock at my door, which I mistook for a morning building creak (this building creaks a lot when the sun shines on it after a cold night— and there goes another one) I looked outside and there was the package. I think it must have been sent from my local store, as the other items in the order haven't even shipped yet, or at least the store hasn't emailed me a notification that they have shipped.
But I am quite pleased with the first hoodie. The XL does indeed fit much better than the mere Ls I've bought in the past, and even better it doesn't have those annoying little strings hanging down that are supposed to tighten or loosen the hood but never actually work. Those things irritate the crap out of me, and I've always wished to be without them, and now at long last I will be. If they have more hoodies of this style on clearance in February or so I think I'll pick up several more so I'll be done with hoodie shopping probably for the rest of my life. What a relief that will be. The only thing I would like better is if they have these hoodies in an XL tall instead of just XL.
The other surprise this morning was an earthquake warning on my cell phone. I didn't know I was signed up for them, but I guess they are part of a package deal, since I signed up for flood and wildfire warnings. Anyway, the earthquake wasn't here, though it was pretty good sized (M6.6) and I did feel a slight, slow rolling motion for several seconds, and my bathroom door, which was closed but off the latch, opened by about three inches, with no breeze. The quake was off the coast of Humboldt County, and might have done some damage over there, though I haven't looked at any news sites yet to find out. My first earthquake warning! Loud and kind of scary.
But I'm glad it wasn't a big local earthquake, not least because when I got the warning I was sitting down. In the bathroom. On what one most often sits on in the bathroom. I suppose it's one of a Californian's worst nightmares, to have to drop and cover while dropping something else. Though I'll say that the horrifying noise the phone made for the warning caused me to pinch pretty damned hard pretty damned fast. At least if it had been a big local quake and I'd had to head outside in a panic, I could first have pulled up my pants with minimal risk of leaving skid marks on my shorts.
Such excitement though! A new hoodie and an earthquake warning! What a world, huh?
