Lately I've been hearing crickets nearby when I open the windows to capture the cool nocturnal breezes. For the first few years I lived in the mini-metropolis I rarely heard summer crickets, and sorely missed their pleasant, calming songs. I have no idea why they are flourishing this year, but I'm glad they are here. This delightful development does not compensate for the extreme heat (in fact when it is hottest I'll have to keep the windows closed and cool the apartment with the air conditioner, which will prevent me from hearing the music) but at least makes it a bit more tolerable. I hope I can continue to enjoy them for at least a couple of hours on each of the upcoming nights. We are getting four triple digit days and four nights with lows in the seventies, which does not bode well, but I'm hoping the forecast will turn out to have been a bit pessimistic. It's happened before.

Arrangements have been made for my nephew to pick up groceries for me sometime between eleven AM and one PM on Friday, and now I have to go order them. It's another poor week at Safeway, with few things I want or need on sale, but I've managed to find enough to get me through the next two weeks, if they don't run out of too much of it. Stores seem to be having a harder time keeping their shelves stocked lately. Maybe their staff have resigned to go get some of those big money fruit-picking jobs that have opened up now that the illegal alien agriculture workers have been driven out of the fields. Nah, probably not. They've probably just come down with measles. At least they'll have good weather for sweating them out.
