I got the shopping done, though as usual didn't get everything I wanted and ended up with a few odd substitutes. Each time I shop is more exhausting than the last, and this time wasn't helped by the fact that it's still way too hot around here. The sparse Sunday traffic and the sky pale brown with smoke gave the town a deeply sad and disorienting quality. I bought stuff for dinner but didn't feel like fixing it, so I just ate half of a fresh baguette with butter. Didn't even drink beer with it, just plain sparkling water. I feel as leaden and anxious as the night.
Not wanting to find myself waking before dawn again I haven't slept, though I've been tired. The music videos of sad songs have rolled across the monitor like ancient memories soon to be lost. In a little while I'll go and read for a while, and then go to sleep. But first I have to wait for the phone to charge enough that I can reconnect to the Idernet and post this entry, as I lost track of reality again and let the battery die. In the meantime "'Round Here" by Counting Crows is loaded on the hard drive, so I'll just listen to that song about suicide a few times.
Oh, charged enough. But now I hear a helicopter flying over the neighborhood, which is unusual this time of night. I hope that doesn't mean a fire has started nearby. Some firefighting helicopters are now equipped with infrared systems so they can operate at night. It's just about to get cooler, and it would be very annoying if the heat got replaced by smoke. I'm looking forward to Wednesday, with a high of 79 and low of 57. It could make me a lot less morose. Today will still be 90, though it will get down to 64 by Tuesday morning. Cause for celebration.
