Well, now, what's all this them? Wednesday evening my cell phone made that hideous noise they make when there is an emergency warning. What was emerging was a fire in upper Bidwell Park, a wildish region few miles east of my apartment, and mostly rustic areas north of town were under evacuation orders. I discovered that the warning system is both insane and incompetent, and it took me a good fifteen minutes to track down a web page with actual information. Had the fire actually been headed my way, I'd have been crispy by the time I found out about it.

Anyway, the fire got started after three in the afternoon, and by six o'clock it was reported at 500 acres and 3% contained. By eleven that night it was over 1,600 acres and 0% contained. With everything the responders were throwing at it, they were still losing ground. I got repeats of the emergency announcement several times, but they were just that, with no new information. New information I could find only on the Idernet. Thankfully the warnings stopped and didn't interrupt my sleep, which ended around six o'clock this morning. And by this morning, the fire had expanded to 45,000 acres. I mean holy crap! Seriously? The damn thing is halfway to Red Bluff! It's a good thing the wind is from the south. Had it been blowing from the east, the mini-metropolis would have been gone by midnight, and the flames would now be climbing the coast range. As it is, I can't even smell it, though the sky is just a bit hazy.

But before the fire got started the plumbers weren't here. The drywall guy was here, but he spent the day in other apartments, so my closet is still catawampus, and I have no idea when I'll be able to set it back into useful order again. I slept a lot, of course, but not very well, and I'm still out of whatever loop may exist. The closest thing to good news is that, despite a high of 103 today, it will get down to a mere 70 degrees tonight, and despite a predicted high of 101 Friday, it will drop down into the low sixties Friday night and might get up to only 87 Saturday. I could live with that. If I'm still alive.
