Well, now I've done it! Without intending to, I've found one of the most astonishing image collections on the web. It is the photo library of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. There are over 20,000 images here, including weather and space images, shores and coastlines, (including some historic drawings and photographs as well as contemporary photographs), pictures of marine species, coral reefs, etc.; and almost all of them are in the public domain! As large as the site is, it is fairly easy to navigate, although seeing any large part of it would take up an incredible amount of time. This is particularly true if you can't resist downloading some of the high resolution images that are available for almost every picture on the site. I downloaded a few of them and, with the 30K connection I had tonight, they took about five minutes each. I'm guessing that, were I to download everything I'd like to from the site, it would take me, oh, say two or three times my life expectancy. Damned internet! Why must it be so tantalizing? Anyway, this is one of those sites that definitely deserves a bookmark. Too bad a longer life span doesn't come with it.
